Educating Children Twelve Months through Kindergarten
How might we plant the seeds of algebraic understanding in our SK class?
And while planting the seeds of algebra seems to be an unfathomable task for SK students … that is exactly what is happening as our boys and girls play the hands-on game of Spill and Add.
What a treat to visit Mrs. Hogue’s and Mrs. Wyatt’s SK class, as they rolled the red and yellow counters to create and then write addition equations to the sum of 5!
Amazingly, this group used these phrases to share their understanding; number sentences, different equations, making the same sum, and combining groups and sets. The understanding of how groups and sets work together are the tiny seeds we plant as a building block for higher mathematics.
